If you are hosting a big feast this Thanksgiving, let me share some advice and strategies for making the event a little easier on you.  Try to keep everything in perspective, remember what is most important; to be with family and friends and appreciate all of your wonderful blessings.

もし、このサンクスギビング（感謝祭）に夕食会を開く予定されているかしら？　そんなあなたにもっと簡単にするための私のアドバイスと戦略を紹介するわね。何事においてもバランスが大事よ。そして何が一番なのかを考えることもね。
基本は、家族、友達と一緒であること、そしてあなたの気持ちをこめて感謝すればいいだけなんですから。

1. Don’t try to do it alone. 一人でしようとしないこと。
Just because I love to cook, doesn’t mean I have to do it all!  If anyone volunteers to bring something, I take them up on it.  I also try to involve the kids with the preparation, either by asking them to decorate the table, clean the house,  or get some type of entertainment ready for our guests such as videos, games,  and music.

料理が好きだから・・・。これは一人で全部しなきゃいけないっていう意味にはならないわ！もし何かを作ってくれる人がいるのであれば、私は持ってきてもらうわ。私は子ども達も準備に参加させるようにしているの。テーブルのコーディネイト、掃除、ビデオやゲーム、それにかける音楽の準備とかもね。

2. Make a menu ahead of time. 事前にメニューを決めておく
By the Sunday before the feast, I make a list of everything we are serving, from appetizers to coffee.  I take note of who is making each item,  plan my week, and jot down my to-do-list on my calendar.

夕食会の前の日曜日までに、アペタイザーから最後のコーヒーまで全部のリストをつくっているわ。そして誰がそれを作るのかメモしているの。一週間の予定をたてて、あとは、そのとおり実行していくのよ。

3. Grocery shop early. 買い物は早めに
I make a detailed grocery list and buy the groceries by Tuesday, so I can start cooking on Wednesday.

食材の細かな買い物リストを作って火曜日までにすませる。そうすれば水曜日にすぐに料理にとりかかれるわ。

4. Cook in advance　事前に調理は済ませておく
Most of my dishes can be cooked well in advance of dinner, and then warmed before the meal.  Remember keep it simple, do not try to pull a Martha Stewart.

料理はディナーの前にすべて終わらせておく。そして食卓に出す前にあたためるだけにしておくの。シンプルにしておくこと。マーサ・スチュアートの真似をしようと思わないこと。

5. Get your home and table ready the night before. 前日の夜までに家とテーブルの準備を済ませる
To avoid exhaustion on the big day, I make sure the house looks presentable and the table is set before I go to bed on Wednesday. (That usually means around 1:00 am!)

私は大事な日のストレスを防ぐために、家がきちんとしているか、テーブルはセットされているかを水曜日の夜寝る前までに確認しておくようにしているわ。（まぁ　だいたい午前１時前後になるけど・・・）

6. Keep appetizers easy. アペタイザーは簡単に
Before dinner, I serve simple foods, such as gyozas (pot stickers), sushi, nuts, vegetables and dip, and sometimes even chips and salsa!

夕食会の前には、シンプルな品を出すようにしているわ。餃子、寿司、ナッツ、ベジタブル・スティックとディップ　それにコーンチップとサルサとかね。

7. Have plastic containers ready so you can pack up leftovers.タッパーを準備しておく
This makes clean-up easier and your guests can take a little extra home to give them a break from cooking the next day.

片づけを簡単にしておくため、それからお客様に持ち帰ってもらうためにとっても効果的よ。

8. Take the last thirty minutes off ３０分前に自分のための時間を
I always try to hold sacred the last half hour before guests arrive.  This is the time I use to get myself cleaned up and enjoy my home surroundings.  I put on my favorite jazz CD and enjoy a glass of wine. That way I’m not incredibly exhausted before the evening begins.

ゲストが到着する３０分前はできるだけリラックスするように努力するの。この時間は、身なりを整えたり、景色を眺めたりしてリラックスするようにしているわ。お気に入りのジャズのCDをかけたり、ワインを１杯だけ楽しんだりしてね。こうしていれば何も始まってないのにうんざりしたりしないでしょう。

9. Give thanks 感謝しましょう
After sitting down, I ask each guest to share one thing for which they are thankful.  This simple tradition really sets the right mood.  We pray and give thanks to those who proudly serve our country, we remember our family and friends, and we remember our loved ones who are unable to be with us.  Then we enjoy the feast we’ve all helped to prepare.    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

そして、夕食会が始まったら、私はゲストの「感謝していること」を聞くようにしているわ。このシンプルな習慣はとってもいいムードにしてくれるもの。一緒に祈って、国のために誇りを持って働く人に感謝をささげ、家族、そして友人を想い、今いっしょにいない愛している人たちに気持ちを寄せる。

In America, many are prepping for a memorable weekend event with family and friends!  Independence Day, July 4th, honors the birthday of the United States of America!  It’s a day of picnics and patriotic parades, and a night of concerts and colorful fireworks!  Start planning and preparing - decide which recipes will explode with flavor and delight your guests during this fun filled day!  Typical items on the menu for the 4th of July picnic/party are healthy salads, potato salad, juicy grilled burgers, sizzling hot dogs, and of course festive desserts!

アメリカでは記念すべき週末のために、家族や友人といろいろな準備をします！　独立記念日（７月４日）・・・それはアメリカ合衆国が産声をあげた日。昼間はピクニックや愛国的なパレードがあり、夜にはコンサートや花火大会などで盛大に祝います！この祝日のために、美味しくてゲストの皆さんが楽しくなるようなご馳走の準備を始めなきゃね。フォース・オブ・ジュライ（７月４日）のピクニックやパーティーでよく作られるメニューは、ヘルシーなサラダ、ポテトサラダ、ジュージーなハンバーガー、アツアツのホットドックなど、もちろんカラフルなデザートも忘れちゃいけないわね！

Quick note: if your holiday event forecasts rain…don’t worry.  Why not plan a small party indoors and watch some amazing “feel good” movies?

My family also enjoys making fireworks craft during the summer season and this year we decided to make our own shirts!   Watch this video and see how easy it is to show off your sparkling style!

アメリカの独立記念日と言えば、なんと言っても「花火」　そこでお子さんと一緒にこんな手作りTシャツを作って楽しんでみませんか？　とっても簡単に出来ますよ！

Materials you’ll need：
Glitter fabric paint
T-shirt
Pipe cleaners
Paper plates (optional)
Scissors

必要な材料：
・　モール　・・・６本
・　布用グリッター・グルー　または　布用のラメ入り絵具
（お子さんが小さい場合は絵の具用の紙皿を用意してあげてください）
・　無地の濃い色のTシャツ
・　はさみ
作り方：
１．モールを半分に折り、曲げた側をひねり持ち手を作ります。
２．持ち手と反対側をタコの足のように広げます。
３．モールに布用グリッター・グルーか布用ラメ入り絵具をのせます。
４．スタンプの要領でTシャツにぺたぺた数回押し付けます。
（このときモールの先端を切ればサイズの小さい花火模様ができます。）
５．乾かして出来上がり！

In America, New Year’s Eve celebrations typically include going to private parties or gathering in public places such fancy hotels, fine restaurants, or popular night clubs.  Drink and dance all night… sleep and watch American football and sleep some more on New Year’s Day - maybe with a bottle of aspirins near by.

What some of your favorite traditions or cultural traditions for New Years?   I would love to hear them!

アメリカのニュー・イヤーズ・イブ・サラブレーションは個人の開くパーティーに参加したり、ファンシーなホテルやグレードの高いレストランや人気のナイトクラブへ繰り出すことが多いのよ

One of the most famous gatherings occurs in New York City at Times Square, where the New Years Eve celebration has become a tradition for many Americans to watch on television. The world cheers and watches as the midnight hour approaches.  At 11:59:00 p.m., a six-foot shimmering crystal ball is lowered in sixty seconds. 

When the ball reaches the bottom precisely at midnight, bells ring, colorful confetti is tossed across the sky, and thousands of people shout “Happy New Year!”  Then the famous song “Auld Lang Syne” is played and everyone holds up their drink and toasts to the brand New Year.  
The old Scottish song was first written in the 1700′s and it means “old long since or as time goes by.”   In Japan, I was surprised to discover that the song is popular for school graduations -now that’s very interesting!

It’s their biggest holiday of the year!

ニューヨークで、人々が集まるのに最も有名な場所は「タイムズ・スクエア」たくさんのアメリカ人はテレビで大晦日の景色を見るのが恒例になっているのよ。盛り上がりながら、午前零時が近づくのを待つ。そして午後１１時５９分、２ｍ弱のキラキラのクリスタル・ボール（訳者注：日本語ではタイムズスクエア・ニューイヤーズ・イブ・ボール／カウントダウン・ボールと訳されていることもある）が６０秒間の降下が始まるの。ボールは午前０時に下へ到達し、ベルが鳴り響き、カラフルな紙吹雪が空に舞い、たくさんの人々がいっせいに「ハッピー・ニュー・イヤー」と歓声をあげるの。それから有名な曲「オールド・ラング・ザイン（日本語タイトル：蛍の光）が流れ、みんな飲み物を持って真新しい年のために乾杯をするわ。この古いスコットランド民謡は１７００年代にかかれたもので、タイトルの意味は「old long sice（久しき昔）又はas time goes by(時の過ぎゆくまま)」。驚いたことに日本では卒業式の歌なんだって　-とってもインタレスティング！

Each year the city of Chicago takes St. Patrick’s Day to a whole new level when it comes to celebrating a holiday – making all the other holidays “green” with envy!

毎年シカゴでは、セント・パトリックス・デーのお祝いはだんだん盛大になって、他の祝日も真っ青ならぬ真っ緑にしちゃうくらいなのよ。

For the last 40 years as part of the St. Patricks Day Parade celebration, a private organization called the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers turns the Chicago River green.  This amazing transformation is truly spectacular as the crew dumps about 40 lbs of non-toxic dye into the river.  Strangely enough, the dye itself is orange, but once it is mixed with the river water it becomes a bright emerald green!

過去４０年にわたって、セント・パトリックス・デーのパレード行事の一環として、個人の組織が「シカゴ・ジャーニーマン（職人）・プラマーズ（配管・板金工）」がシカゴ川を緑に染めるの。このびっくりな催しは、本当に圧巻なもので、４０ガロンもの非毒性の染料が川に流されるわ。この染料はもともとオレンジ色なんだけど、水に溶かすと明るいエメラルド・グリーンになるから不思議よね！

Each year I sponsor a Halloween Party at Marifu Park, downtown Iwakuni. We provide free candy, games, crafts, music and fun activities so the children of Iwakuni can enjoy this fun holiday!  Thank you also to the great volunteers who help make this a wonderful event for everyone!
