Get ready to become an international banker, you’ll need to two wallets - jokingly, one for Yen and the other for the American stuff.
At first it may seem difficult figuring out money in Japan, but after a little practice it’s easy. To estimate a price, simply insert a mental decimal; i.e. if a cup of coffee costs ¥396, this is roughly equivalent to $3.96 (depending on the exchange rate of course).
*Note - recently (2010) the dollar has been much WEAKER than the yen (it’s at the lowest I have ever seen) so the ¥396 cup of coffee will now cost you closer to $4.50.
