以前放送された「トラベル」のコーナーから、その一部のご紹介です。
アレン家では、水上スキーの体験レッスンに参加してきましたよ。子ども達はあっという間に自然に溶け込み、なじんでしまうからすごいわよね。もし、私が失敗する場面をご覧になりたい方がいらっしゃっるんじゃないかしら・・・。残念ながら、このサイトでのショート・クリップではありません（笑）　とっても楽しくて、エキサイティングな一日でした。もちろん子ども達にとっても最高な経験でしたよ！ 

For one of our travel segments, we went on a fun waterskiing adventure in Hiroshima.  Yasaka Dam is located less than an hour away from the air station.   The kids were naturals in the water and took to it right away. If you want to see me crash a few times, you’ll have to watch the whole segment on TV, but here’s a short clip for your entertainment. It was a really fun and exciting day and the kids had a wonderful experience!  You should try it!

I enjoy growing my own fresh vegetables, but my skills are nowhere near the Japanese level. I’ll keep trying!

うちでは自宅菜園を作って、採れたて野菜を楽しんでいます。だけど、技術はご近所の日本の方にはまだまだ及びませんが、がんばってます。

So the next best thing is to visit my local farmers’ market or roadside stands. Now, I am not crazy about waking up super early on a Saturday or Sunday morning, getting quickly dressed, and racing off to the market to be in front before it opens;  however once you’re in the market, it is so worth it. I love how the Japanese plan, grow, and produce in seasonal cycles. Not like in America where you can find anything all year round, the Japanese prefer using fresh, seasonal foods for their meals, buying it the same day it will be cooked.

自宅菜園以外に新鮮な野菜を手に入れる方法といえば、直売所でのお買い物ですよね。　週末の朝に早起きして、着替えて、オープンの前から並んでっていうほど熱狂的ではないけど・・・。　だけど、一見の価値はあるわ。何を植えるか計画して、育て、季節ごとのサイクルで生産する日本の農業のスタイルは素晴しいと思います。一年中何でも揃うアメリカ式とは違い、日本では新鮮で旬の素材を食卓に出すことを好みますものね。

Most famer’s markets have an interesting and friendly atmosphere. Warning!..There are a lot of happy go-lucky morning people walking around with cheerful faces, warm greetings, and ready to shop!

多くの直売所はフレンドリーな雰囲気でいっぱい。　注意！たくさんの楽天的な朝方人間の皆さんが、にこにこ笑顔で、あたたかい歓迎と共にあなたのお買い物を待ち構えていますよ！

 I love the fact that the food is local and freshly picked. Second fact, you can get as much as you want, or they sell them in smaller amounts to fit your recipe needs. Third, the prices are not as high as you may think. Though they might be slighttly higher, you can’t beat the freshness, quality, and taste – yes, it’s that good, and good for your health! My kids can quickly tell the difference and prefer it over sweets and fatty snacks! That will make any mother happy!

地元で生産された食材はとても新鮮ですよね。それから、レシピに必要な分量だけ、少なくても多くてもそろえることができます。更に、イメージしている価格より安いんです。価格は新鮮さ、品質、そして、味には代えらませんよね。何といっても良い食材は健康のためにも良いのですから！　うちの子供たちもその違いには敏感だし、甘くて脂っこいお菓子よりこういった食材の方が好きです！　これってママをハッピーにしますよね！

Remember the best organic food is what’s grown closest to you. Support your local farmers, make some new morning friends, and enjoy shopping for your health!   Note: Don’t forget to bring your own shopping bags, save money and be friendly to mother Earth!

In America, many are prepping for a memorable weekend event with family and friends!  Independence Day, July 4th, honors the birthday of the United States of America!  It’s a day of picnics and patriotic parades, and a night of concerts and colorful fireworks!  Start planning and preparing - decide which recipes will explode with flavor and delight your guests during this fun filled day!  Typical items on the menu for the 4th of July picnic/party are healthy salads, potato salad, juicy grilled burgers, sizzling hot dogs, and of course festive desserts!

アメリカでは記念すべき週末のために、家族や友人といろいろな準備をします！　独立記念日（７月４日）・・・それはアメリカ合衆国が産声をあげた日。昼間はピクニックや愛国的なパレードがあり、夜にはコンサートや花火大会などで盛大に祝います！この祝日のために、美味しくてゲストの皆さんが楽しくなるようなご馳走の準備を始めなきゃね。フォース・オブ・ジュライ（７月４日）のピクニックやパーティーでよく作られるメニューは、ヘルシーなサラダ、ポテトサラダ、ジュージーなハンバーガー、アツアツのホットドックなど、もちろんカラフルなデザートも忘れちゃいけないわね！

My family also enjoys making fireworks craft during the summer season and this year we decided to make our own shirts!   Watch this video and see how easy it is to show off your sparkling style! 

アメリカの独立記念日と言えば、なんと言っても「花火」　そこでお子さんと一緒にこんな手作りTシャツを作って楽しんでみませんか？　とっても簡単に出来ますよ！

　Materials you’ll need：
Glitter fabric paint
T-shirt
Pipe cleaners
Paper plates (optional)
Scissors

必要な材料：
・　モール　・・・６本
・　布用グリッター・グルー　または　布用のラメ入り絵具
（お子さんが小さい場合は絵の具用の紙皿を用意してあげてください）
・　無地の濃い色のTシャツ
・　はさみ
作り方：
１．モールを半分に折り、曲げた側をひねり持ち手を作ります。
２．持ち手と反対側をタコの足のように広げます。
３．モールに布用グリッター・グルーか布用ラメ入り絵具をのせます。
４．スタンプの要領でTシャツにぺたぺた数回押し付けます。
　（このときモールの先端を切ればサイズの小さい花火模様ができます。）
５．乾かして出来上がり！

When spring planting leads to a bountiful home garden harvest or you decide to take a trip your local farmer’s market, make the most of these fresh flavors with a recipe that is designed to bring out the best nature has to offer!

春、ホームガーデンに植えつけた野菜の苗がすくすく育ち、たくさん収穫できたとき、または地元の野菜の直売所を訪れたとき、この野菜たっぷりのレシピを作って自然の恵みを満喫しましょう。

Watch how I combine fresh and nutritious ingredients to make a wonderful fresh garden quiche which requires no pie crust! Great as a hearty brunch breakfast or a simple summer supper.

早速、新鮮で栄養バランスに優れたフレッシュ・ガーデン・キッシュの作り方をご紹介しましょう。このキッシュはパイ・クラストを使わないお手軽バージョンよ！ヘルシーなブランチに、ちょっとした夏の夕食に最適のレシピなのよ。

Fresh Garden Quiche( Crust-less)
1 small onion, diced
1/2 cup diced zucchini ( another option is to grate the zucchini)
1/4 cup diced eggplant
3 stalks of asparagus, sliced
1 small diced, tomato
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon extra for rubbing your baking pan with
1/2 cup fresh spinach, chopped
4 large eggs
3/4 cup milk or heavy whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt or garlic powder (optional for extra garlicky taste!)
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme & pinch minced fresh rosemary
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

【材料】
　玉ねぎ（小）　・・・　１個　
　ズッキーニ（一口大に切ったもの）カップで約１２０cc分
　なす（一口大に切ったもの）　　　　カップで約６０cc分
　アスパラガス　・・・　３本
　トマト（小）　　　・・・　１個
　ほうれん草（ざく切りにしたもの）カップで約１２０cc分
　にんにく　　　　・・・　３かけ　
　バター　ソテー用に大さじ１／焼き皿用に大さじ１
　卵（大）　　　　　・・・　４個
　牛乳若しくは生クリーム　１８０cc　
　塩　　　　　　　　・・・　小さじ1/2
　（お好みでにんにくの風味を増したい場合）
　　　ガーリック・ソルトかガーリックパウダー　小さじ1/4 　
　タイム（乾燥）　・・・　小さじ1/2 　
　ローズマリー（生）みじん切りにしたもの　ひとつまみ
　こしょう　　　・・・　小さじ1/4

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and butter pie plate or deep quiche pan.
2. Meanwhile, in large, wide pan, add butter over medium heat.
3. Heat until melted and add diced onions and pepper with a dash of salt.
4. Cook, stirring occasionally until starting to become tender, about 3 minutes.
5.  Add your favorite vegetables stir to combine
-6. Cook, stirring occasionally and adding salt and pepper as desired, until vegetables become slightly tender, about 8-10 minutes
7. Toss to combine and place into quiche  or pie dish.
Note:  Don’t make the dish too heavy and be aware of vegetables that will release a lot of water.
8. In large bowl, combine eggs, milk/cream, seasonings, salt and pepper and whisk to combine well.
9. Pour egg mixture into quiche shell, stir a bit with fork and place into oven to bake for 30 minutes, or until eggs are cooked through.
10. Carefully remove from oven, top with Parmesan (optional) and parsley and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

【作り方】
１．　オーブンは摂氏１８０度に予熱しておく。パイ皿またはキッシュ用の焼皿にバターをぬっておく。（野菜はすべて一口大に切っておく。にんにくは潰して使う）
２．　中火にかけたフライパンにバターを加える。
３．　フライパンに（にんにく）、玉ねぎ、コショウ、しお少々を加える。
４．　玉ねぎが柔らかくなるまでときどき混ぜながら約３分炒める。
５．　一口大に切った野菜を加え全体をなじませるように混ぜる。
６．　野菜が少し柔らかくなるまで、ときどき上下を返すように８～１０分ソテーし、必要であれば塩・こしょうをする。
７．　６．をパイ皿（キッシュ用の焼皿）に移して少しさます。
ノート：野菜を多めに入れると、野菜の水分が出るため完成したキッシュが固まりにくい場合がありますので気をつけてください。
８．　卵液を準備します。大きなボールに卵、ミルクか生クリーム、ハーブ類、塩、コショウを入れ、よくかき混ぜます。
９．　パイ皿（キッシュ用の焼皿）に入れてある野菜の上に８．の卵液をかける。フォークなどで少し混ぜてからオーブンで３０分ほど、若しくは中心までしっかり火がとおって卵液が固まるまで焼く。
１０．オーブンから取り出し、お好みでパルメザンチーズとみじん切りにしたパセリを振りかけ、１０分程度さましてから取り分ける。

Tip:  If you have extra vegetables sauted add a little pasta!
アイディア：　あまった野菜があればソテーし、パスタとあわせると手軽にもう一品用意できます！

In the heart of Yanai within the White Wall area is an interesting place to take your kids or friends visiting Japan for the first time.  Yanai Nishi-Gura is a spacious room that is filled with wooden pillars and high ceiling frames.  

柳井市の中心、白壁の町並みの中に、はじめて日本を訪れる方や、お子さんそしてお友達に日本の文化を体験できる興味深い場所が「やない西蔵」です。日本の蔵をそのまま使った木造で高い天井の建物はとても落ち着く雰囲気に包まれています。

The appearance of the building has been unchanged since it was established at the end of Taisho Period ( 1912-1926).  This unique sight seeing facility hosts several fun workshops, a gallery for special exhibitions, or just come to relax! 

外観は建設された大正時代末期の様子をそのままです。この日本情緒あふれる施設では、いろいろな体験ができるコーナーやギャラリーがあります。ぜひごゆっくりお楽しみ下さい。

There’s a little cafe in the middle of nowhere, tucked away in the hills of Iwakuni.  This handmade, simply built structure is called “nora.”    Come with me and my friends as we escape to a relaxing environment and enjoy a terrific  healthy organic meal!

岩国市伊房の山の中に、この小さなカフェがあります。この手作りのぬくもりのあるカフェが「nora」です。このリラックした雰囲気の中でヘルシーなオーガニックな料理を楽しみませんか。

Naoko Takabayashi, the owner and chef of this cafe, studied in Tokyo to learn how to make organic bread.   She raises her own natural yeast by using the finest organic ingredients, then bakes her special bread by a handmade wood fired oven. 

高林直子さんがこのカフェのオーナーシェフ。自家製酵母のパンの焼き方を東京で修行してきたそうです。彼女がパンに使うのは天然酵母・国産小麦と天然塩、そして石釜で焼き上げます。

Because she only uses natural ingredients, the bread tends to be a little tougher however this is normal.  Oishii! 

ナチュラルな材料をナチュラルな方法で焼き上げるので、彼女のパンは市販のものと比べて少し固めですが、噛めば噛むほど味わい深いパンですよ。うーん　美味しい！

Nora’s lunch menu is simple and full of fresh organic vegatables.   You can taste the savory flavors and the curry meal…wonderfully light, colorful, and delicious!   Eating well never tasted so good!

I have always been fascinated with antiques; and living here in Japan I’ve come across some beautiful and treasures! There’s a Japanese word that describes beauty uniquely – Shibui.  It means the type of beauty that doesn’t need announcement – its quality speaks for itself.   Wow, what a great word…   Whether you love flea markets or enjoy visiting antique stores Japan has a lot to offer for anyone seeking something unique.

私はアンティークにとても興味があります。ここ日本に住んでいると、その美しさと価値に出会う機会がたくさんありますよ！こういった美しさを日本語で「シブイ」というらしいです。人がその美しさを表現するまでもなく、物自体が無言で語っているような状態をこの言葉で表現するのだとか・・・。ワォ、とってもステキな言葉ね。フリーマーケットの愛好者であれ、アンティークショップめぐりの愛好者であれ、とってもユニークなものを日本ではたくさん見ることができます。

My home is filled with a wide collection of antiques, amazing furniture (tansu in Japanese), paintings, and cermamic pieces!  I love decorating with different items from around the world, it inspires me to create beautifully rich and visually captivating appeal throughout my house – plus it give my guests something to talk about.

When it’s raining outside, encouraging your children to entertain themselves for a couple of hours is not always an easy task. Today it seems that television and video games are the best solution, however I feel it is not always in the best interest of the child.  They need time to create, imagine, and feel good about what they have achieved.

雨がしとしと降る日に、子ども達を数時間でも何かに集中して遊ばせるのってちょっと大変。最近ではテレビやゲームで遊ばせるのが１番の解決方法だと思われているけれど、これは必ずしも子ども達にとってベストじゃないって感じてるわ。子供に必要なもの・・・それは、何かを作り出したり、考えたり、達成感を得ることじゃないかしら？

When my kids were young, I always needed a back up plan for rainy days.  Hopefully I can provide some fun (and inexpensive) ideas they will help pass the time.  Unleash your child’s imagination during the next rainy day and watch these projects bring sunshine to their faces!

Rainy Day Painters　
レイニーデイ・ペインター

Materials:
Hard stock/poster paper
Washable makers

【用意するもの】
厚めの紙（ポスターの裏紙など）
水性マーカー

Instructions
1. Let your child draw a wonderful picture with washable markers.
2. Next. take the picture outside in the rain and watch the color run for 15-30 seconds
3. Bring the painting(s) back inside and lay them on a flat surface to dry.
If the child is old enough, have them sign their name and date it…. It could be a Picasso someday!

【遊び方】
１．マーカーで子ども達にお絵かきさせます。
２．次に絵を外に持ち出し雨にあてます。そして雨の状況にもよりますが、１５秒～３０秒色が流れるのを見ます。
３．絵を屋内に持ち帰り平らな場所に広げ乾かします。
子ども達がすでに文字が書ける場合、サインと日付を入れさせましょう。将来あなたの子どもがピカソになるかもしれないもの！

Homemade Finger Paint
ホームメイド・フィンガー・プリント

Material needed:
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons salt
2 1/2 cups cold water
2 cups boiling water
Food coloring

【用意するもの】
小麦粉　日本のカップで２カップと８０ｃｃ分
塩　　　　小さじ２
水　　　　日本のカップで３カップ
熱湯　　　日本のカップで２カップと８０ｃｃ
食用色素

Instructions:
1. Mix the 2 cups of flour with the 2 teaspoons of salt.
2. Add the 2 1/2 cups of cold water; stir until smooth.
3. Gradually add this mixture to the 2 cups of boiling water.
4. Boil until the mixture becomes smooth and thick.
5. Add food coloring until you get the desired color.

【遊び方】
１．小麦粉と塩を混ぜる。
２．冷たい水を加えてスムースになるまで混ぜる。
３．２を熱湯に少しずつ加える。
４．２がスムースで厚み（粘り）がでるまでゆでる。
５．食用色素を好みの色合いになるまで加える。

Umbrella & Rain Portrait
傘＆雨のポートレイト

Materials needed:
Large colored paper – white is best
Cupcake paper baking liners
Glue 
Crayons or Markers
Cotton balls (optional)
Pipe cleaners (optional)

【用意するもの】
大きめの色画用紙　（白がベスト）
カップケーキ用ライナー
のり
クレヨンかマーカー
（オプションで）コットン・ボール
（オプションで）モール

Instructions:
Draw a picture of what it looks like when it is raining outside. Let the child use their imagination!
Note: if your child doesn’t know ask questions: Are there clouds? Is there a rainbow? Are there flowers?

Once the child has their picture drawn, add the umbrellas!
Cut a baking cup in half, round off the edge that you cut so it is the shape of an umbrella.
Shape the pipe cleaner stems to look like the umbrella handles (if this is too difficult have the child draw the handle on their paper). Glue the umbrellas onto your drawing.
Proudly hang their picture on the refridgerator!

【遊び方】
１．雨の日の様子の絵を子どもに欠かせます。　子ども達のイマジネーションを発揮させてあげてね！
ノート：子ども達が何を書いていいのかわからないようであれば、こんな質問をしてみて・・・「雲はある？」「虹はでてるかしら？」「お花はさいてるのかしら？」
２．子ども達が絵を完成させたら、傘を加えましょう！
３．まず、ライナーを半分に切り、その端をさらに切り落として傘の形にします。
４．モールを適当な長さに切り、片方の先端部分を傘の持ち手のように曲げます。（これは子供が傘の持ち手の絵をかくのが難しい場合の方法です。）　のりで傘を絵に貼り付けます。
５．絵を冷蔵庫の扉などに胸を張って飾ってあげましょう！

Anyone man can be a father, but it takes a very someone special to be a DADDY!  My father is the most amazing person – ambitious, a hero, a guide, an inspiration,  and incredible friend (plus a terrific cook).   He always told me how much he loved me and how much he believes in me.  I am honored to be his daughter.    You’re the greatest!   Gracias por todo papi!   Feliz dia de los padres!

Forget the neck ties and socks!  Here are some fun ideas for you and the kids to show your Dad how much you really appreciate him:

父の日にお父さんに感謝をささげる楽しいアイデアをいくつか紹介するわね。

*  Have the kids draw a picture with his favorite colors and frame it. 
*  Take a picture with the family and frame it for him to display at his office.
*  Take his order and repare his favorite foods or meals all day!
*  Make a cute coupon book – TV and remote control possesion, washing his car, …be fun!
*  Put together a gift basket of snacks, movies or his favorite magazine or books.
*  Make a BBQ or Sports Basket with cold beer or fancy wine
*  Make a banner and display it proudly in the kitchen!

 Just be creative and show him how much you LOVE him!

お父さんの好きな色で絵を描いて額に入れて贈る。
家族写真を撮って額に入れて会社のデスクの上に飾ってもらう。
お父さんの好物の料理のオーダーをとって、それを作ってあげる。
クーポンの綴りを作る。中身はテレビとテレビのリモコンの優先使用券、お父さんの車の洗車の券などいろいろ楽しいものを考えてね！
お父さんの好きなスナック、DVDの映画、雑誌、本などをつめたギフトバスケット
バーベキューの材料を詰めたバスケット、冷たいビールとかファンシーなワインも一緒に。
上の図にあるようなバナーを作って家族のつどうキッチンに飾る。
