Valentine’s Day, February 14th, is one of the most romantic days of the year – so it’s natural that we want to celebrate this day in a unique and special way! Japan celebrates Valentine’s Day a little differently than most other countries. The original www.iwakunimcas.com website was created by Ms Lisa Stewart, a military spouse who dedicated extensive time and effort into building every detail of the site during her tour in Iwakuni. When Lisa PCS’d, my company sponsored the site to keep it alive as a service to the community, because the information was so helpful to so many people.

This information is UNOFFICIAL and is simply for the purpose of military spouses helping others.  If you find something that is possibly outdated or incorrect, please send a message on the contact form at the upper right corner of the page.  The air station is going through many new changes and we would appreciate your proactive help with keeping the information current for everyone to use.

Japan has the highest elderly population rate in the world.  Here in Japan respecting old people is a cultural matter and it even has its own holiday- just last week, the 3rd Monday of September, Japan celebrated “Respect for the Aged Day.”   Japanese citizens are interested in helping senior citizens to remain independent and productive.  However many times, young people’s relationship with the elderly narrows…down to giving them their seats on the train or bus.

“Silver Seats” was introduced somewhere in the late 1970′s by the Japanese National Railways, their focus was to provide a special seating area for those who were older or was physically challenged. At the end of the 1990′s the privileges were expanded to include pregnant women and those with infants, however gradually over the years these seats were being referred to ”Priority Seats” verses “Silver Seats.”

You can find this special seating area near the sliding glass doors, a quick access for those needing to get in and out easily and most important safely.  The area is spacious and the seat cover is designed with a multicolor fabric, different from the rest of the seats.

Now of course some elderly people deny to use these special seats, they’re extremely proud and wish not to be treated as “weak” old people.

I can totally understand that…

However recently the young people of Japan seem to feel overly-exhausted or maybe even mentally disabled with the overload of stress from family living, school, exams, and part time work.   Many times I have seen them rushed in, grab any vacant seats they can find -  including priority seats.   They immediately pull out their cell phones start texting or listen to music, however the majority of times I usually watch them fall asleep…..drift into a deep coma.

Now I am not trying to justify their youthful behavior, but I have a feeling the last thing on their mind is who’s sitting where and if they inconveniently bothering anyone.

The “Priority Seat” sign is truly self explanatory.  Please be kind and considerate to those who need a just a little more assistance – it maybe the “rest” they are looking for maybe after a very long day.

Interesting fact:   Did you know that using your cell phones may adversely affect an individual who has an artificial peacemaker?

Shinto and Buddism

Some people say they are too embarassed to ask about religion in Japan,  let me try to clarify….

There are two main religions in Japan that most people adhere to Shinto (native to Japan) and Buddhism (introduced from China/Korea), they both date back many thousands of years.   There is an expression in Japanese, “Born Shinto, die Buddhist.”   This means that Shinto shrines mainly deal with ceremonies of life; birth, christening type ceremonies, ceremonies of good luck before a big event like a sports game or school examinations, and marriages.

Buddhist temples mainly deal with funeral rites and memorial ceremonies.   Many homes have both a small household Shinto shrine (yashiro) and a family Buddhist alter (butsudan) and pray to both of them all year round.   People pray to the yashiro and the Shinto Kami or god that protects the family and community.   They pray to the Butsudan for their beloved ancestors and place ceremonial food offerings such as rice, sweets, or maybe their favorite alcohol.

During Obon the butsudan is the center of attention. Obon is a time for praying for the ancestor and many households have a Buddhist priest visit the house and perform a short memorial ceremony.

** Quick Tip ** As a newcomer to Japan you may become confused by the presence of both temples and shrines, but it’s really not that hard to tell the difference between the two places of worship.

Here are few clues to look for… AND be sure to read up on do’s and don’ts,before you visit –  you don’t want to disrepect anyone or the culture.

You are at a Shinto Shrine:

• You always enter a Shinto shrine through a torii gate.
• A pair of guardian dogs or lions, called shisa or komainu, often sit on each side of the entrance to a Shinto Shrine
• There is a purification fountain near the entrance to a Shinto shrine where you cleanse your mouth and hands before prayer.

You are at a Buddhist Temple:

• A Buddhist temple always houses an image of the Buddha and a large bell.
• A large incense burner is usually that the front of a temple.  The smoke created by the burning of incense is said to have healing properties.
• There is often a pagoda on the premises of a Buddhist temple … and now you know.

There are many names for this annual event “Celestial Lovers Day, Star Festival, and China’s version of Valentines Day”  but in Japan “Tanabata” is a pretty special and incredibly colorful event. Un  festival romántica!

Tanabata, meaning- evening of the seventh,  is considered to be a mixture of Chinese and Japanese traditions.   It was introduced into Japan in the 8th century and became very popular folkore during the Edo Period or Tokugawa Period (1603 to 1868).

The story is about two lovers, Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair), separated by their families they can only meet across the Milky Way once a year on the night of July 7th.    The first time they tried to meet they realized they could not cross the river because there was no bridge.   Orihime (Vega) cried so much that a flock of birds called “Magpies” came and promised to make a bridge with their wings so that she could cross the river.   It is said that if it rains on Tanabata, the birds cannot come and the two lovers must wait until another year to meet.   How sad…

Today Japan, people generally celebrate this day by writing heartfelt wishes on small pieces of paper called “tanzaku”, hang them on a bamboo pole along with other decorations.  You write your special wish on a piece of paper and at midnight you burn it either in a lamp that you let float down a river or in a bonfire. I hope and pray your one true wish will come true!

If you are visiting or living here for any length of time, you should take advantage of everything the country has to offer.  There are many sights and experiences in Japan that simply shouldn’t be missed.  Here are a few ideas for “must-do” and “must-see” activities and destinations in Japan.  Let’s start with local, simple, traditional Japanese cuisines -日本料理 Washoku 和食  Oishii!!   (Delicious!)

滞在期間の長さに差があるとしても日本を訪れたなら、体験できることの全てに挑戦してみましょう。ここには沢山見るべきもの、体験すべきものがあるのですから、チャレンジしないと勿体無いですよ。では、日本で「しなければならないこと」「見なければならないこと」のいくつかをご紹介したいと思います。最初にご紹介するのは地元のシンプルで伝統的な日本食ー和食から始めましょう。美味しいわよ！！

If you enjoy sushi, you’re in the right place; and if you’ve never tried it, maybe you should have it at least once or twice.  That’s what I did and now I am hooked! (No punn intended)  In Japan, sushi restaurants are literally everywhere!  Many different kinds of restaurants in Japan serve sushi, ranging from fancy restaurants to simple establishments that treat it almost like a fast food snack.  Many people, when they first visit Japan, are surprised as to how many kinds of sushi are actually available, unlike other countries where there is only a very simple and limited variety.

お鮨が好きな方にはぴったりですね。そしてお鮨未体験の方には是非１度か２度挑戦してみる事をオススメします。私はすっかりはまってしまってます！日本ではお鮨屋さんはいたるところにあります。非常に高級なお店から一般のファストフード的なお店まで種類もさまざまです。そして多くの人が、日本国外では限りのあるメニューが、ここ日本ではたくさんの種類があることに驚かされるものです。

The various noodle dishes that are popular in Japan are another culinary experience that shouldn’t be missed. Ranging from the familiar ramen-style noodles, to the Japanese udon noodle which is much thicker; you’ll find that noodles are prepared in many delicious and interesting ways. There are also fried noodle dishes such as yakisoba, which is an absolute favorite for many Americans.  This popular dish is generally served with a vegetable and meat combination, along with a a tangy brown sauce. Also okonimiyaki is another foreigner favorite, I know it was for my parents when they visited Japan!  It is served in two ways; Hiroshima style (layered like a light pancake omlette – personal favorite) or Osaka style (all mixed up together like a giant western omlette).

いろいろな種類の麺類にチャレンジしてみることも、外せない美味しい経験ですね。ラーメンのようなスタイルの麺から少し太めのうどんのような麺、いろいろな調理方法で調理されます。また、多くのアメリカ人の大好物「焼きそば」のような炒めた麺料理もあります。焼きそばは野菜、肉、麺を炒めて少し濃い目の茶色いソースで味付けをします。「お好み焼き」も外国人に好まれるものの一つですね。うちの両親も大好きです！調理方法には広島風（クレープのような生地の上に具材を重ねるもの）と大阪風（生地と具材をすべて混ぜて焼くもの）の２種類があります。

If you have the opportunity to go to a Yakiniku restaurant, don’t miss the chance. These Korea-influenced style of restaurants let you do some of the cooking yourself. You simply choose your meats and then you can cook them yourself at the table on a grill that is built right into the table. You can then dip the cooked meats in tasty sauces and enjoy.

もし、焼肉屋に行く機会があれば、ぜひそのチャンスを逃さないでください。韓国風焼肉店では、お肉を自分で焼くスタイルになります。食べたいお肉を注文し、各テーブルに備え付けられているグリルで焼いて食べます。焼いた後は美味しいタレにつけて召し上がれ。

These restaurants also offer other foods, but it’s the meats that are the real highlight of the meal.

If you are in the mood for some fast but delicious food, try stopping at a stand that serves Yakitori. This grilled chicken-on-a-stick is a popular food in Japan, especially if you are on the run!

これらのレストランではもちろん他のメニューも豊富です。もしあなたが手っ取り早くおいしいものを食べたいのであれば、「焼き鳥」に挑戦してみてはいかがでしょうか？これは竹串にさした鶏肉をグリルした料理です。

こどもの日 - 鯉幟 Koi-nobori (Carps streamers)

Every May 5, this nation celebrates a wonderful event.  Originally it was ‘Boy’s Day,’ but to be fair to both sexes they renamed it to ‘Children’s Day.’   It’s a special day set aside to respect all children’s personalities, backgrounds, and to celebrate their abundance of happiness for the future days to come.

The koinobori are higher than the rooftops
The big black carp is the father

I have to tell you there’s nothing like it.   I can never get tired of watching them waves across the sky… so many beautiful carp flags flying around my countryside home.

Why a carp flag? Carps are the symbol of strength, longevity, determination.  In Japan the old stories go way back –  the carp is a symbol of determination and vigor, overcoming all types of obstacles, they continue to swim upstream.   In China,  a carp or Koi is the symbol of good luck and good fortune.  I guess that is why many adults decide to have a tattoo designed of a carp on their arm or back.

There are plenty of fun activities or events that will rejoice this special day for all children to enjoy.  Traditional yummy snacks are also offered everywhere such as kashiwa-mochi, a sticky rice cake wrapped in oak leaves with a tasty sweet bean flavoring inside, plus crunchy rice snacks .
