Cormorant fishing is an old traditional fishing method in which fishermen use trained cormorant birds to fish in wide rivers.

鵜飼いは、漁師が訓練した鵜をあやつって川魚を取る伝統の漁法です。

Called ukai (oo-kye, 鵜飼) in Japanese, it takes place in 13 cities in Japan.  The most famous location is Gifu, Gifu Prefecture, home to Cormorant Fishing on the Nagara River, which has continued uninterrupted for the past 1,300 years.  I am lucky enough to live in a town that still preserves the tradition; Iwakuni’s Kintai Bridge area, on the Nishiki river.

Cormorant fishing　は日本語では鵜飼と呼びます。日本国内１３箇所でその伝統の漁法が引き継がれています。もっとも有名なのは岐阜県、鵜飼の発祥の地「長良川」ではその歴史は１３００年にも渡るのだそうです。ラッキーなことに私が住んでいる岩国では、錦川のほとり錦帯橋周辺で伝統の漁法を見ることが出来ます。

The process is simple and not harmful to the birds.  The fishermen place a small metal ring around the base of the bird’s neck.  This prevents them from swallowing larger fish (Ayu or Sweetfish), which are held in their throat, but the birds can swallow smaller fish.  When a cormorant has caught a fish in its throat, the fisherman brings the bird back to the boat and has the bird spit the fish up. It’s fascinating to watch. After a long and successful night, the bird is abundantly rewarded with plenty of fresh fish for his hard work.

漁法はシンプルで鶏にとっても全く苦痛の無いものです。鳥たちをコントロールするために、漁師は鳥の首に金属の輪をつけています。この輪は鶏が大きな魚を飲み込むのを防ぎます。これは大きな魚だけで、小さな魚は飲み込むことができるのです。一旦鵜が喉に魚を封じ込めると、漁師は鵜を船に戻し魚を吐き出させるのです。この工程が繰り返し行われます。とても興味深い漁だと思いませんか？長くそして大漁の夜が終われば、たくさんの鮎のご褒美を貰い、労をねぎらわれるのです。

Cormorant fishing was once a successful industry, however now its primary use is to serve as a tourist attraction and preserve its cultural traditions.

今日の鵜飼はかつてほど盛んではありませんが、観光事業の一翼として、そして文化伝統と美の保存のために行われています。

 

Before the event began we sailed on the Nishiki River our boat enjoyed a delicious bento dinner meal..oshii!  Kanpaii!  Cheers!!

鳥達が魚を取る前に錦川の上に屋形船で繰り出します。そこでは美味しい食事が私達を迎えてくれます。

Once the night slipped in, we enjoyed the spectacular event under the romantic lanterns

夜の帳が落ちると、屋形船には提灯に火がともされます。私達はこの鳥と闇とかがり火がかもし出す素晴しい光景を楽しみました。
