I am often asked, “Why do the Japanese have raccoons in front of a store” or “What is the meaning of the cute white cat with its paw waving?”  Good question!

よく聞かれること・・・。「どうして日本のお店の前にはタヌキの置物があるの？」「あの手を上げている白い猫の意味は何？」　うん　良い質問ね！

Luck is loved by everyone, especially anyone who runs a business or wishes a blessed life. This is even more important in Japan because the people are very superstitious. They often place some kind of lucky charm in front of their stores, in the hopes that their business will run smoothly. There are two types of figurines that are most popular; a raccoon and a cat.

「幸運」はみんな大好き。特に自分でビジネスをしている人や、人生にツキを呼び込みたい人にはね。日本人にはちょっと迷信深いところがあって、こういうのってとっても大切なのよ。ビジネスがうまくいく事を願って、お店にお守りを置いたりするわ。そしてこの「タヌキ」と「猫」はその一部なの。

“Tanuki”

Tanuki (狸 or タヌキ) is often referred to as a “Japanese raccoon” because they look very similar, but are actually a completely different species.   Statues of tanuki can be found outside many Japanese temples, restaurants, and shops – especially noodle shops. These comical statues often wear big, cone-shaped hats, have a funny smile, and carry a bottle of sake in one hand with a promissory note or empty purse in the other hand.

このタヌキは「ジャパニーズ・ラクーン」という名称の動物。私達アメリカ人の知っているラクーンとよく似ているけれど、全く別の種類です。タヌキの置物は寺院、レストラン、お店の前で見ることが出来ます。特に麺類のお店の前が多いようですね。このちょっとコミカルな置物は大きな笠をかぶり、笑みを浮かべ、徳利と通帳時には財布などを持っています。

This particular animal has eight special traits that are supposed to bring good fortune.  The hat symbolizes protection against trouble or bad weather; the big eyes perceive the environment and help make good decisions; a sake bottle represents virtue; a big tail provides steadiness and strength until success is achieved; over-sized testicles symbolize financial luck; a promissory note represents trust or confidence; a big belly symbolizes bold and calm decisiveness; and a happy-party smile!

この置物には８つの幸運の意味があります。笠は、「思わざる悪事災難避けるため用心常に身をまもる笠」　大きな目は「何事も前後左右に気を配り正しく見つむることな忘れそ」　徳利は「恵まれし飲食のみにこと足利て徳はひそかに我身につけん」　尾は「なに事も終わりは大きくしっかりと 身を立てるこそ真の幸福」　おおきな金袋は「金銭の宝は自由自在なる運用をなせ」　通帳は「世渡りは先ず信用が第一ぞ活動常に四通八達」　大きな腹は「もの事は常に落ち着きさりながら 決断力の大胆をもて」　ハッピー・パーティー・スマイルを浮かべていることもあるわね。

“Maneki Neko”
招き猫

Maneki Neko (Prosperity Cat) is also known as the Beckoning cat. This adorable ceramic animal is waiving with it’s right or left paw. The right symbolizes luck and flow of wealth to the merchant or person’s life; and the left paw is for more customers or friends to come into their lives.  The higher it waves the paw, the more customers, wealth and luck will come to the merchant. I guess if you find one that has both paws up….that’s a super lucky cat!

招き猫は、英語では「Beckoning cat」として知られています。この陶器の置物は右や左の前足を上げています。右側で招いているのは「お金、福」、左側で招いているのは「人・客、商売繁盛」　両方揚げている招き猫を見つけたなら・・・それはスーパー・ラッキー・キャットね！
